Mathias is rocking

I admit it: When I am alone I secretly shred a mean air guitar to my favourite rock tunes, still hoping that someday I will be a famous rock star. And now it is all coming true. Well, sort of. Guitar Hero is an awesome PS/2 game that lets you play rock tunes on a mini guitar controller. Aim is to make a career as a rock star by playing the songs at virtual gigs. You earn money, fame, and respect for playing well, and move on from one gig to the next.

The game comes with an ingenious guitar controller, a miniature plastic Gibson SG guitar complete with whammy bar for extra tremolo. On the guitar´s neck there are five colored keys representing chords that have to be played at the correct time by strumming the pickup. A simplified representation of the notes is scrolled by during the song to guide you through the song like karaoke.

The game comes with 40 songs, many are classic rock jewels like Deep Purple´s Smoke on the water or Ozzie´s Iron Man, but some are from other generes like Iggie´s Search and Destroy or more recent stuff like Take me Out by Franz Ferdinand.

Because of the simplifications you cannot learn how to play a real guitar with this game, but the feeling of rocking this plastic guitar in front of the TV is as close as I have ever been to being a rock star. The fun Mathias and I already had with this game is more than I can put in words. We own both Guitar Hero I and Guitar Hero II, complete with two guitars, and there is not one night that we don´t practice playing together in our new band Pig Rectum. I put my trusty air guitar in the cellar for now, I´m sure I won´t be needing it for a while.
