My dentist has a laser she uses for surgery and even removing decay from teeth. On the lower power settings, she can make a little picture like the ones in the article. It doesn't hurt and it goes away when the skin naturally wears away. She says it's great to put a little smiley face on a kid's palm to show them there's nothing to worry about when she sticks the thing in their mouth.
